One night while coon hunting with my grandpa I asked him if he ever was over to the Grass Lake Rifle Club on Norvell Rd. He said he went there in the early days and shot with Dutch Wolfe and others and had a great time. I asked if there had ever been a sportsman’s club in Grass Lake such as Brooklyn, Chelsea, or Jackson, he said not to his knowledge. Later in the fall of 1993, I thought of all the great times we had going to dog trials, the fur traders, and the hunting stories and camaraderie that was there. After belonging to several clubs in the 80’s like D/U, Pheasants for Ever, Brooklyn Sportsman Club, and Michigan Center Duck Hunters and how I looked forward to going to meetings, fund raisers and so on it felt important to get a sportsman’s club started here in Grass Lake. One day at the Grass Shack Jim Lester and I were having a beverage and I said to him what do you think about my idea of starting a sportsman’s club here in Grass Lake where all of us who liked to hunt, fish and enjoy the outdoors could get together and maybe someday have a piece of land and a building and so on. He said to count him and Bill his brother in and he would talk to some others about it. We had our first actual meeting December of 1993 at there office on Cedar Knoll Dr. Myself, Jim and Bill Lester, Bob Adams, Dave Adams and Dick Coy.

We all put in 20.00 dollars and that’s how we got started. I set up a meeting open to the public for January of 1994 to discuss our goals and ideas; we held it at the high school. Our main goals then were promote hunter education, hunting, and fishing, and helping preserve the natural resources around us and in our state. There were a lot of great ideas and excitement that night and when we left we had 48 paid members. We were on our way as the Grass Lake Sportsman’s Club. There have been a lot of changes with the club and country since. Lets as members old and new not forget what this club was formed for in 1994 and move forward with a positive focus so we can enjoy the things we all worked so hard to achieve in such a short time.

Grass Lake Sportsman's Club (GLSC) is a conservation oriented club promoting the legal and ethical use of our natural resources. GLSC is also very civic oriented. We put on the annual 4th of July parade and chicken barbeque as well as two hunter safety courses a year and two “Take A Kid Fishing” events each year, one
on the free fishing weekend in June and the other on the free fishing weekend in February. GLSC is also involved in promoting youth actives such as our youth
trap league, boy scouts, summer youth ball team as well as the two scholarships
we offer each year to local high school seniors.
